After years of neglect and deferral, I decided that it was time to make some
order in my library.
I discovered this yellowish almost worn
out book, as you will see from some of the scanned pages.
Written in perfect literary Arabic; the book was published in 1934 during
the reign of King Fouad when Farouk was the 13 years old crown prince. I started
to examine the contents of the book, and was astounded as I will briefly go
through some of its contents.
Who was Elie Levy Abou
Asal? Why wasn’t he mentioned in any of the Egyptian Jewish publications? Why
was the book written in Arabic? I believe that
Abou Asal didn’t write the book for the Egyptian Jewish readers, as he
undoubtedly knew that the majority of the Egyptian Jews regrettably
chose not to educate themselves in Arabic.
The book was therefore written with the objective to send a message to
the educated Egyptian and Arab readers across the Middle-East.
The purpose of this page
is not to recite the contents of the book, but to display the guts of the writer
and his courage to write in Egypt
about the aspiration of the Jews for “A homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine”. Abou Asal was
well aware of the risks involved nevertheless he was advocating the need for a
homeland for the Jewish people. He believed in the tolerance and hospitality
of the Arab people, and cited in many of the contents, how the Jews
formed an integral element in the Orient.
Abou Asal dedicated the
book to “The greatest Jew ‘Yousef Aslan Qattawi Pasha’
the president of the Israelite Community in Egypt
and the former Minister of Finance. The book contained extensive photos of
Jewish celebrities like Theodore Hertzel, the great struggler

I will confine my
comments this time by publishing some of the photos and pages from that rare
historic book.

بعد سنوات من الإهمال والتأجيل منذ هجرتى إلى استراليا قررت أنه قد آن
الأوان لكى أقوم بتنظيم مكتبتي والكتب التى حملتها معي من مصر
وأثناء عملية التنظيم أندهشت عندما لاحظت بين الكتب المتناثرة كتاب صفحاته
أصبحت صفراء من قدمها, كما ستلاحظ من الصور المرفقة
الكتاب مكتوب بأسلوب عربى سليم وقد تمً طبعه في مصر سنة 1934 فى عهد جلالة
الملك فؤاد الأول عندما كان نجله الأميرفاروق يناهز الثالثة عشر من عمره
ابتدأت بتصفح مضمون الكتاب وعندها فوجئت بمحتويات الكتاب
من هو الكاتب أيلى ليفى أبو عسل؟ لماذا لم يذكر شئ عنه فى أي من نشرات
اليهود المصريين؟ لماذا كتب الكتاب بالًلغة العربية؟
أعتقد أن أبو عسل لم يوجه كتابه إلى اليهود المصريين لأن أغلبية اليهود
المقيمين فى مصر للأسف لم يدرسوا اللغة العربية دراسة كافية لكى يستوعبوا
موضوع الكتاب. لذلك استنتجت أن الكتاب موجه ويستهدف القراًء المصريين
والعرب المثقفين فى الشرق الأوسط
والغرض من تعليقي على هذا الكتاب هو ليس سرد محتوياته ولكن لكى أبين شجاعة
الكاتب وجراءته بأن يكتب في مصر عن آمال وطموح اليهود في أن يكون لهم وطن
جنباً إلى جنب مع العرب في ألأراضى المقدسة.
لقد كان أبو عسل يدرك تمام الإدرك بمهابة ودقة موقفه والمجازفة النى
اتخذها عند كتابته هذا الكتاب ومع هذا فقد دعى فى كتابه إلى حاجة اليهود
لإنشاء وطن قومى لهم. وكان يؤمن إيماناً صادقاً في موافقة وترحيب العرب فى
هذا الشأن. وقد ذكر الكاتب في كتابه كيف أن اليهود يُكَونون جزءً لا يتجزأ
في منطقة الشرق الأوسط
وقد أهدى أبو عسل كتابه إلى صاحب السعادة يوسف أصلان قطاوى باشا رئيس
الطائفة اليهودية فى مصر و وزيرالمالية السابق
الكتاب يحتوى على عدة صور لمشاهير اليهود مثل تيودور هرتزل المجاهد الكبير
وحييم ويزمان ويوسف موصيرى وغيرهم من المشاهير
وسأكتفي في الوقت الحاضر بنشر بعض الصور المنشورة فى الكتاب
