In your message you are inquiring about a Sabban family in Alexandria .You are stating that Nissim Sabban was a butcher there.You are also asking why jews left Tunisia to go to Egypt. I have, very much the same circonstances. My father ,Victor Abergel, was a shohet and a butcher in Alexandria.So were my grandfather, Raphael Cohen ,my uncles Victor and Marco Cohen.All together they owned 2/3 of the meat business in Alexandria.The person to ask about your father and grand father is my mother.She is at the present time in Spain ,Portugal And Israel.At the first opportunity, I will ask her and get back to you.By the way we also emigrated to France when we left Alexandria(where I was born)in 1949.Our family is a mix of Tunisian and Morocan.Our Tunisian side is Semama and apparently my great grand mother came to Egypt on an arranged marriage, as it was the coutume then.In the latter part of the 19th century the situation in the Magreb was very tense for jews, riots accured in Fez and Marakech, and a great wave of emigrants arrived in Egypt(it was thought to be the land of opportunity, just like America today).There always was a presence of jews from the Magreb in Egypt even before the time of Maimonides,and more than half of the jews from Egypt are of magreban origines.
