On November 21, 1999 at 7:00 P.M. the Magen David Sephardic Congregation of Greater Washington held a special "Jews from Egypt" event. This celebration was part of a series of similar presentations made at MDSC. The first two events celebrated the rich culture and traditions of the Jews from Morocco and Turkey.

For the Egyptian night nearly 200 people showed up and they were treated to a very rewarding evening. Gail Shirazi, the indefatigable organizer of this series, smartly decorated the Hall where the event was staged with artifacts and mementos brought by the Egyptian contingent from Magen David.

The movie "I Miss the Sun" by Mary Halawani was shown, and it was followed by a short presentation by three native Egyptian Jews ( Herbert Samuel, Jeffrey Hazzan and Andre Douek) who shared their memories of how they lived a Jewish life in Egypt before the Second Exodus. The movie that described the life in Egypt of a family headed by Rosette Halawani, the author's grandmother, was warmly received by the mixed audience in attendance.

After the movie and the presentation, the MDSC sisterhood offered the buffet of sweets and dainties from Egypt. In charge of the baking and cooking were the Egyptian cordon-bleus Jacqueline Samuel, Celia Sassoon, Liliana Brown, Simone Shofer and Misha Clement who with the help of their Moroccan and Askenazi sisters served: Kahks (both sweet and salty), Konafa, Maamoul bel loz, Maamoul bel aagua, Basboussa.and Khoshaf.

In keeping with this tradition of sharing, with the Jewish Community of Washington, the ethnic background of its membership MDSC is now looking forward to showcasing the "Jews from Iran".
