Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Sunday, July 18, 1999 at 23:58:40 (EDT)I was the last one of my family to be born in Alexandria. When we left ,in 1949 I was just 4 months old and did not have any personal memories of my birthplace. I, together with my brothers and sisters, grew up in Paris. I received a typical french education and Arabic was the language of my parents's secrets , needless to say, I did not speak it. However,I always had the feeling that I was part of that very special culture. Our parents accent, our special foods, our respectfull behaviours with older people, our concern for all family members(even the ones we did not know),my father's authoritarian ways,my mothers hoovering over us always bringing that sens of safety and love to us(sometimes we felt it was too heavy)and many other things that always kept me aware of my origin. At the age of 17 I left France and went to Israel to join the IDF. That was an experience that I will never forget.I was on my own for the first time in my life,no bossy father, no overcaring mother(I am certain she was worried 24 hours a day for me),just me in a kiboutz . I soon learned Hebrew and in October 1966 I finally entered the service. Then something happened,in the eyes of the other soldiers and people around me,because of my name "Abergel" I was grantedly taken for a Moroccan. This made me realise that the Jews of Egypt were realy a mixture from many countries and their only communality was that very distinctive egyptian caracter and the adoption of the french language as their own. When I came to America I finaly met most of my relatives, there is still some in other countries that I haven't met yet.Today I am very aware,in a country that is made up of many different ethnic group,of my own ethnicity. My children are born here and I think that their ethnicity will melt in the American melting pot and we truely are the last generations to belong. I would like to corespond and share on this and other subjects. Robert Abergel ROBERGEL@YAHOO.com Bellevue, WA, USA .
PS:any info about relatives(Alexandria,Abergel,Cohen,Penias Wahnounou)are welcome.

New York, Ny USA - Sunday, July 04, 1999 at 13:54:09 (EDT)We left Egypt in 1956 and 1957 together with many other Jews at the time of the mass exodus. We live in Melbourne (Australia). Some ten years or so we had the opportunity to fly from Tel Aviv to Cairo and spent a few days revisiting our youth! We simultaneously faced so many changes and so few changes. The crowds, the dirt, the sun, we also so the Synagogue, the Lycee, Groppi, etc... I do hope you have the opportunity to also revisit Cairo.
