I have enjoyed reading the many different sections of your website. I have friends who left Egypt in the early 60's, and I wanted to acquire a better historical knowlege and perspective on what life was like for them in their homeland at that time. I hope and pray everyday that we will be able to live in a world where all of us are judged on our character rather than our race, gender or religion. At best, I hope that we can come to understand and respect our uniqueness as well as our commonalities.

My name is Mark Kagan. In the fall of 1976, I was a member of a group of 10 students from the State University of New York who studied at Alexandria University. I lived in an apartment at Mustapha Pasha on Hurreya St. during September to December. I was the only Jew in the group and I came to know the Jewish community in Alexandria, including Clement Setton, when I attended High Holy Day services at Nebi Daniel synagogue. After that semester, I went to study in Israel. I returned for a visit a year and a half later and stayed at the Jewish Retirement Home during Pesach. Mr. Messeca accompanied me to the police station. If anyone reads this and remembers me or hearing about me, please respond. I would like to know what happened to you.

Hello, My father was born John Chalom in Cairo (or Heliopolis) in 1937 (he moved to Sydney, Australia and changed his name at age 10). His father was Willy Chalom, also of Cairo. Willy Chalom wrote a book called "Nous Venons de Palestine" (a sort of Zionist travelogue) in 1938, co-authored with Jules Levy, his brother-in-law and my great-uncle. Other than that I have almost no information about him or the family history (he died in the early 1940s and my father knows very little). I would appreciate any information that anyone might have about my grandfather, or about the Chalom family history. I'd also be very interested in relevant parts of the Levy family history: my grandmother was Lila Levy, and her father Iamadeo (?) Levy, with a connection somewhere to Malta. Many thanks! At this institute, we are trying to compile a database of notable Jewish women, Jewish female educators, Jewish Women's organizations, and Jewish women leaders from all over the world. We desperately need more data on Jewish women from Egypt. If someone on the executive board could email us any names and email addresses, we would be most grateful. In particular, we are trying to find Carmen Weinstein's email address. Could you please email it to us? Thank you very much for your time. I was the last one of my family to be born in Alexandria. When we left ,in 1949 I was just 4 months old and did not have any personal memories of my birthplace. I, together with my brothers and sisters, grew up in Paris. I received a typical french education and Arabic was the language of my parents's secrets , needless to say, I did not speak it. However,I always had the feeling that I was part of that very special culture. Our parents accent, our special foods, our respectfull behaviours with older people, our concern for all family members(even the ones we did not know),my father's authoritarian ways,my mothers hoovering over us always bringing that sens of safety and love to us(sometimes we felt it was too heavy)and many other things that always kept me aware of my origin. At the age of 17 I left France and went to Israel to join the IDF. That was an experience that I will never forget.I was on my own for the first time in my life,no bossy father, no overcaring mother(I am certain she was worried 24 hours a day for me),just me in a kiboutz . I soon learned Hebrew and in October 1966 I finally entered the service. Then something happened,in the eyes of the other soldiers and people around me,because of my name "Abergel" I was grantedly taken for a Moroccan. This made me realise that the Jews of Egypt were realy a mixture from many countries and their only communality was that very distinctive egyptian caracter and the adoption of the french language as their own. When I came to America I finaly met most of my relatives, there is still some in other countries that I haven't met yet.Today I am very aware,in a country that is made up of many different ethnic group,of my own ethnicity. My children are born here and I think that their ethnicity will melt in the American melting pot and we truely are the last generations to belong. I would like to corespond and share on this and other subjects. Robert Abergel ROBERGEL@YAHOO.com Bellevue, WA, USA .

PS:any info about relatives(Alexandria,Abergel,Cohen,Penias Wahnounou)are welcome.

We left Egypt in 1956 and 1957 together with many other Jews at the time of the mass exodus. We live in Melbourne (Australia). Some ten years or so we had the opportunity to fly from Tel Aviv to Cairo and spent a few days revisiting our youth! We simultaneously faced so many changes and so few changes. The crowds, the dirt, the sun, we also so the Synagogue, the Lycee, Groppi, etc... I do hope you have the opportunity to also revisit Cairo.

Hello, I am writing on behalf of the International Research Institute for Jewish Women's Studies at Brandeis University, MA, U.S.A. Annie Rosenzweig, International Research Institute on Jewish Women's Studies.

Hi I was born in 1952. I had lived during my childhood in a town in Egypt called Belbeis in the Sharkeya Governorate. I have read that this town has a long history, and that many big jewish families had live there since long. But now I can see no jewish families. I even read that there was a synagogue in Belbeis, but I could not find out where that synsgogue was. Anybody who had lived in Belbeis or at least has roots in Belbeis send me email please as I am studying the history of my Town.
